The county was first established in 1844, it was first named Richardville County after a Miami Indian Chief named Jean Baptiste Richardville or Pe-che-wa which translates to Wildcat which is where the name Wildcat Creek came from. Then in 1846, the name was changed to Howard County, in honor of US Representative Gen.Tilghman Howard from Indiana, who died in 1844.
